The aims of the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology are to improve health care in the field of psychiatry and neurology and to conduct research in these and allied fields.
Research programs are focused on pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of brain disorders as well as mental health promotion. The newest sector: Mental Health Centrum – is functioning as an community mental health care system, broadly implementing the idea of self help management of mental disorders.
A Mental Health Program for Poland was developed by the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology in collaboration with the WHO. The Program was accepted by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology is responsible for the Program implementation.
The hospital wards of the Institute provide treatment to patients with mental and neurological disorders mostly from the Mokotów district (with the population of about 400,000), also serve as a nationwide consulting and treatment center.
In 1992 Institute attained the status of WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health. It has been extended by WHO during the following years.
From 2004 the users are evaluating the services provided by the Institute, giving feedback to the researchers, clinicians and management.
In January 2005 Institute acquired ISO 9001 – 2000.
